Big Creek Hydroelectric Powerhouse

Artistic Roof and Design is a leading commercial and industrial roofing company serving the Fresno, California area for more than 20 years. A family-owned business focusing on quality, this company stakes its reputation on providing outstanding service and workmanship with every project they undertake. So when Southern California Edison (the main electrical utility company for the region) contracted Artistic Roof and Design to install a new roof for their Big Creek Hydroelectric Powerhouse on the San Joaquin River, they naturally chose Polyglass as their waterproofing solution of choice.

Project Needs and Challenges

According to lead contractor Kevin Robinson, temperature and moisture presented the two greatest challenges to this installation project, encompassing 235 squares. “The foam is highly sensitive to temperature and moisture, making this a very hard job to do during this time of year,” said Robinson. “The average 8 am temperature on the job was 28 degrees [Fahrenheit]; this being a hydroelectric powerhouse, we [also] had to deal with constant moisture in the air.”

To overcome these challenges, the team started by priming the substrate with PolyBrite® 780, a black, water-based epoxy primer designed to absorb radiant heat from the sun for better bonding of the spray polyurethane foam. After installing the foam layer, they applied a second layer of PolyBrite 780 to add adhesion to the foam and prep the surface for the polyurea layer and waterproof roof coatings to follow.

The roofers finished the surface with Polyglass PG 700-QS (1.5 gallons of grey and 2.5 gallons of white). PG 700-QS is a quick-setting elastomeric coating typically applied to provide resistance to early rain exposure. In this case, it was used to seal the SPF foam against the constant moisture emitted by the powerhouse itself.

Hyatt House Miami Airport Hotel

Maxx Leverage Roofing & Restoration is a licensed roofing company with over two decades of experience operating out of Idaho, Oregon, Florida, Louisana, and Alabama. This veteran-owned company offers roof repairs, reroofing, and roof replacement services for residential and commercial properties and specializes in emergency disaster relief for survivors needing temporary roofing and tree and debris removal.

When Maxx Leverage contractor and long-time Polyglass customer, James Moore, learned about Polyglass’s Polystick® XFR roof underlayment at a Polyschool session last April, he was so impressed with the product’s innovative qualities he chose to use it for his next big project in Miami, FL.

This contract was the Hyatt House Miami Airport Hotel in South Miami, Florida, requiring over 30,000 square feet of new roof underlayment. A perfect opportunity for James to put Polyglass’ dual-purpose, fire-resistant, and self-adhered waterproofing underlayment to the test!

“The contractor chose the superior protection of the Polystick XFR self-adhered (SA) underlayment waterproofing system. XFR was selected for the advanced Burn-Shield Technology™ with maximum fire-resistance properties delivered in one single layer installed as part of the metal roof assembly (unlike conventional fire barrier systems requiring a secondary fire barrier to achieve the UL Class A Fire Rating for Combustible Decks). Polystick XFR qualifies for up to a 30-year warranty backed by the Polyglass protection guarantee.”

Martha’s Vineyard Storage Facility

Trademark Services LLCLocated in Edgartown, MA, Trademark Services, LLC is a full-service contractor and builder serving businesses and residences on Martha’s Vineyard.

Catering to a mostly high-end clientele, Trademark Services focuses on using only the highest quality construction materials on both residential and commercial products, including the use of Polyglass roofing products on several multimillion-dollar homes on the island. So when they were called upon to install a roof on a high-end new construction storage facility, Polyglass was naturally their brand of choice.

Project Needs and Challenges

This project called for a 20,000-square-foot new roof installation on a new construction climate-controlled storage facility on Martha’s Vineyard. Since the facility was to be used for the storage of residents’ valuables during the off-seasons when they were not on the island, the roof had to have flawless waterproofing and be able to withstand the occasional hurricanes and Nor’Easters that sometimes affect the area, especially in the fall and winter. Additionally, since the roof was being installed in November with shortened days and the possibility of inclement weather, so the team needed a quick-apply base layer to provide immediate waterproofing protection while construction continued.

To meet these challenges, Trademark Services applied multiple layers of products from the Polyglass Elastoflex line over tapered ISO insulation. The first layer of the 3-ply system was Elastoflex SA Base, which provided immediate waterproofing protection so other tradesmen could do their work on the interior while the rest of the roof was installed. They then installed an inter-ply sheet of Elastoflex SA V and finished the roof with an Elastoflex SA P cap sheet.

Why Elastoflex?

Trademark Services chose the Polyglass Elastoflex system because of its dynamic combination of fast, easy application and superior weathering performance. By using Elastoflex products exclusively, the team was able to install multiple plies quickly and easily to ensure maximum weatherability of the roof — a must-have considering the valuables that would be stored inside. The Elastoflex product line consists of a series of high-quality elastomeric membranes designed for optimal long-term weathering protection.

Products used in this project include:

  • Elastoflex SA Base is a premium self-adhered elastomeric membrane base for low-slope roofing designed with a strong non-woven polyester mat for enhanced tear strength and puncture resistance. It is also rated for 90-day exposure, making it an excellent option for a temporary roof on its own (which is why Trademark Services chose it).
  • Elastoflex SA V is a high-quality elastomeric membrane designed with a reinforced fiberglass mat for dimensional stability. It serves well as a base layer on its own, or it can be used (as in this case) as an interply membrane used in a multiple substrate system.
  • Elastoflex SA P is a superior quality SBS granulated cap sheet built with a non-woven polyester mat for outstanding weathering, puncture, and tear resistance.

All Elastoflex products used in this project feature the patented ADESO® Dual-Compound Self-Adhered Technology for easy self-adhered application. They are also rated as Miami-Dade County Approved for superior protection in hurricane-like conditions.

2020 Street of Dreams

Ramon RoofingWith locations in Austin and Fort Worth, TX, Ramon Roofing has been one of the go-to full-service roofing companies in the State of Texas for more than 25 years.

When Ramon Roofing recently installed a new 24-gauge standing seam metal roof system for Fort Worth, Texas Magazine’s 2020 Street of Dreams project, their underlayment of choice was the self-adhered Polyglass’ Polystick® MTS Plus.

Their work on this project earned them a coveted 2020 Golden Hammer Award from the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) for Best Residential Metal Roof.

Project Needs and Challenges

This roofing project involved installing a 9500-square-foot standing seam metal roof on a sprawling new construction home in Southlake TX. This project was particularly complex because the roof was cut up into several sections with multiple pitches.

Given the hot summers typical of the Texas climate, Ramon Roofing also knew they needed a high-quality underlayment that was specifically designed to withstand the high temperatures the metal roof would undoubtedly experience.

To meet the challenges of this project, Ramon Roofing chose Polystick MTS PLUS, a self-adhered waterproofing underlayment specifically designed for high-temperature applications such as metal roofing systems.

Polystick MTS PLUS

Polystick MTS PLUS provided a perfect solution because its slip-resistant film makes it ideal for providing traction on roofing systems with multiple slopes and pitches — plus it can remain exposed for up to 180 days, giving the roofers time to give the roof the attention it deserves.

Known for its high tensile strength and thermal stability, Polystick MTS PLUS is also rated to withstand temperatures up to 265°F, making it an excellent choice for the warm Texas climate. Additionally, Polystick MTS PLUS also features our patented ADESO® Self-Adhered Technology, a dual-compound manufacturing process with a robust self-adhesive applied to the bottom surface of the membrane with a split-release film for incredibly easy application.

Polyglass congratulates Ramon Roofing for winning NRTCA’s 2020 Golden Hammer Award for this amazing roofing system, and we’re proud to have contributed to their success.

Triton’s Trumpet Condominiums

With more than 83 years of experience and an unwavering commitment to excellence, FA Taylor Company is one of the go-to roofing and sheet metal contracting companies in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. When Triton’s Trumpet Condominiums called them in August 2020 to address significant roof damage on two of their buildings, the Polyglass Elastoflex roofing system was their product of choice for the roof replacements.

Project Needs and Challenges

Triton's Trumpet roof and skylineLocated in Ocean City, MD, Triton’s Trumpet is a resort-style condominium complex located by the beach, highly popular for vacation rentals. When Tropical Storm Isaias hit the area on August 4, 2020, the storm blew off half the roof of one building and significantly damaged the roof of another.

After assessing the damage, FA Taylor Company determined that both damaged buildings required a complete roof replacement. They quickly installed temporary repairs to seal the roof and prevent further damage while they waited for the insurance to come through, which didn’t happen until nearly three months after the storm.

Once the project was cleared for completion, the contractors tore out the old modified roof systems, installed new HD coverboard over the concrete substrate, installed Elastoflex SA V for the first membrane layer, and finished it with a cap layer of Elastoflex SA P Polar Cap.

Elastoflex System

Elastoflex SA

Polyglass’ Elastoflex products are a series of high-quality elastomeric membranes designed for optimal long-term weathering performance, also complying with strict Miami-Dade County standards for hurricane protection.

Elastoflex SA V Polar Base membrane is a self-adhered elastomeric base ply built with a high-performance reinforced fiberglass mat for maximum dimensional stability. The Elastoflex SA P Polar Cap is a granule surfaced roofing cap designed to withstand colder temperatures.

Given Maryland’s unique climate that is both hurricane-prone and subject to cold, snowy winters, FA Taylor Company chose this combination of Elastoflex products to ensure the new roof would have long-term all-weather protection. Both Elastoflex membranes feature the patented ADESO® Dual-Compound Self-Adhered Technology for easy self-adhered application.

Lereta Headquarters

CIS logoC.I. Services, Inc. is a Mission Viejo, California-based commercial/industrial roofing company that has gained statewide notoriety over the past three decades for their high-quality commercial roofing installation, maintenance, and repair services. In recent years, C.I. Services has also expanded into providing solar roof solutions, solidifying their reputation as an industry-leading surface support company for the southern California region.

When Lereta, LLC, a property tax and flood services company, needed a roof restoration for their headquarters in Pomona, C.I. Services was their contractor of choice. Naturally, C.I. Services turned to Polyglass products to ensure a quality restoration.

Project Needs and Challenges

The Lereta roofing project consisted of an aging Sarnafil PVC roof – 500 squares in total. C.I. Services determined that a quality silicone roof coating would restore the integrity of the roof. To meet the requirements of a 15-year warranty, C.I. Services chose to install PolyBrite single-ply primer and PolyBrite 90.1 Silicone at a rate of two gallons per square foot.

“This project was very straightforward,” says C.I. Services General Manager Marcus Clinco. “We pressure washed the roof, primed with the single-ply primer and sprayed the silicone in one pass. We actually even purchased a new Graco 933 spray rig specifically for this project so we could spray silicone.”

Despite their confidence in Polyglass products, the contractors wanted to be doubly certain of the results, which is why they made sure to do a field adhesion test.

“This was the first-ever Polyglass project installed over worn PVC using the PolyBrite Primer,” says Clinco. “Polyglass rep Dan Gentile came out and did pull tests, and we even cut out a sample of the old roof membrane and gave it to him so he could send it back to Florida for further testing.”

Watch the video below to learn how to conduct a field adhesion test:

In the end, the Polyglass products stood up to the test. “The customer was very happy with the final product,” says Clinco.

Polyglass Elastomeric Roof Coatings

C.I. Services used the following Polyglass products for the Lereta roof restoration project:

  • PolyBrite Primer – one-part primer used for enhancing adhesion of Polyglass silicone roof coatings to a variety of porous and non-porous substrates.
  • PolyBrite 90.1 Silicone Roof Coating – a premium grade liquid-applied silicone coating that provides outstanding weathering and fungal resistance while also offering ultraviolet protection for an energy-saving “cool roof” effect.

C.I. Services and other industry-leading contractors choose Polyglass roofing products for their quality and reliability, as well as outstanding technical support and warranty coverage. With decades of proven experience and a commitment to innovation, Polyglass has developed a line of trusted roofing systems and products that address a wide range of commercial roofing challenges.
