Most people look at a roof and see only its visible surface. Whether the roof features metal panels, tile or shingles, the outer layer defines the visual character of a building and takes the first hit from sun, rain, snow and wind. But when weather finds its way beneath, the underlayment becomes one of the roof system’s most important lines of defense.
For Brandon Roofing, Polyglass‘s Polystick® PX HT offered the combination of protection, performance, and installation efficiency the project required.
Engineered to provide a flexible, self-adhered, high-temperature underlayment for sloped roofing systems, Polystick PX HT offers protection against the harsh conditions that truly test the limits of a roof, from wind-driven rain to ice dams to elevated temperatures. Its non-reinforced construction keeps the membrane flexible and conformable, while a high-temperature SBS elastomeric self-adhered compound creates a watertight bond to the roof deck.
That combination is particularly useful in vulnerable areas where water tends to cause trouble. Polystick PX HT not only provides whole-roof coverage, but its design is ideal for protecting detail areas such as valleys, flashing, skylights and eaves. Its flexibility also allows it to conform around penetrations and transitions, helping installers create continuous protection where changes in the roof’s geometry can pose opportunities for water intrusion.
The membrane’s adhesive compound is also formulated to seal around nails and fasteners, creating a water-tight barrier that is critical when roofs face wind-driven rain or ice-dam conditions in which water can be pushed or backed up beneath the finished roof covering instead of simply shedding down the slope.
Polystick PX HT is also designed with the installer in mind. Its top surface features a woven polyolefin facer engineered for tear resistance, UV stability and enhanced walkability to make installation safer and easier. By eliminating a separate attachment step, its self-adhered technology can also help contractors improve labor efficiency and accelerate roof dry-in.
Timing is another common challenge on roofing projects, especially when installation of the final covering is delayed due to weather or construction schedules. Polystick PX HT offers contractors additional scheduling flexibility with its ability to remain exposed to UV for up to 120 days. It’s also appropriate beneath roofing materials that experience significant heat buildup, with a high-temperature compound approved for temperatures up to 240°F.
While Polystick PX HT is the perfect choice for metal roof covering, it is also approved for use under asphalt shingles and mechanically attached tile system and is approved for use under the state of Florida’s strict building code, particularly for multiple steep-slope roof-covering configurations outside the state’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone.
For contractors and specifiers, these features add up to a product designed to solve several problems at once with faster installation, better traction during application and a more durable moisture barrier beneath a range of finished roof systems.
The best underlayment may be out of sight once the roof is complete, but Polystick PX HT is designed to keep working between the deck and the elements, protecting the roof system long after the final panel, tile or shingle is installed.
